Estimates pair walking cadence with MET values (CADENCE-Adults studies; Compendium of Physical Activities). Real burn varies with stride, terrain, and fitness.

How the steps to calories calculator works

Steps do not burn a fixed number of calories. The calculator first turns your steps into walking time using a cadence, the number of steps you take per minute, then estimates the burn for that time with the same MET formula the rest of our exercise tools use, scaled by your body weight.

The formula and the paces

Calories per minute equal METs times 3.5 times your weight in kilograms, divided by 200. The four paces pair a cadence with an intensity: about 100 steps a minute is 3 METs, 110 is 4 METs, 120 is 5 METs, and 130 is 6 METs. These pairs are the rounded thresholds from the CADENCE-Adults studies of walking cadence and intensity (Tudor-Locke and colleagues). At the casual pace, 1,000 steps take about ten minutes.

Why it is an estimate

Stride, fitness, terrain, and what you carry all change the real figure, and phones and watches do not count steps perfectly either. A useful rule of thumb is about 0.03 to 0.05 calories per step, with lighter people toward the low end and heavier people toward the high end. Treat the result as a ballpark.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

Very roughly 300 to 500 calories for most adults at a casual pace, depending mainly on body weight. A 155-pound (70 kg) person burns about 370 calories over 10,000 casual steps. A brisker pace raises the figure. Enter your own weight above for a personal estimate.

How many calories do 1,000 steps burn?

About 30 to 50 calories at a casual pace: around 30 for a 125-pound (57 kg) person, about 37 at 155 pounds (70 kg), about 44 at 185 pounds (84 kg), and about 50 at 210 pounds (95 kg). The calculator shows your own per-1,000-steps figure next to the total.

Does walking faster burn more calories per step?

Yes. A brisker cadence is a higher intensity, and intensity rises faster than the time saved. At about 130 steps a minute the MET value is double that of 100 steps a minute, while the same steps take only about a quarter less time, so each step costs more energy.

How many steps does it take to burn 500 calories?

For a 155-pound (70 kg) person at a casual pace, about 13,500 steps. A heavier person needs fewer steps and a lighter person needs more, and a brisker pace lowers the count. Try a few step counts in the calculator with your own weight to find your number.

How many steps a day do I need to lose weight?

There is no magic number, because steps help mainly by adding to your calorie deficit. A practical approach is to find your current daily average, then add about 2,000 to 4,000 steps and hold that consistently. Diet still drives most of the loss.
